Wood is easily the
most popular material used to manufacture Wine Racks. Wooden Wine Racks
have been used since the beginning of wine storage.
Advantages:
Easy to use.
Easy to assemble.
Relatively light weight for the
strength needed.
Can be made to match décor.
Very durable.
Flexible and able to return to original
shape.
Available in many different species.
Environmentally friendly and a renewable resource.
Readily available to the home hobbyist
Disadvantages:
Not fire proof but can be treated
with a fire retardant.
The
following are the most popular species of commercially available wood
used in Wine Rack production.
Pine
Cedar
Spruce
Fir / Hemlock
Oak and other American hardwoods
Any of
the above woods make great Wine Racks. It is essential to remember
a few important qualities when you are choosing the type of wood. Avoid
woods which have a wide space between growth rings. Trees which are
grown quickly are great for house framing material but not for Wine
Racks. Greater strength and less warping is directly related to the
higher density of growth rings per inch. Look for a minimum of 10 growth
rings per inch. Any of the above listed woods will generally have more
than enough strength for a wine rack.
You will
need to ensure that the wood is properly dried. The wood should
have no more than 12 percent moisture content. In many cases, there
will be a stamp on the lumber that will read "S-Dry". This will indicate
that it has been dried down to the NAWLA rating of 19 percent moisture
content. The lower the moisture content, the less likely the wood will
warp when it undergoes the process of equalizing with the humidity level
in your home. Your local lumberyard will have a moisture meter
which you can use to test the moisture content.
When you
design your Wine Rack do not use cross sections that are too small.
The cross section should be at least 3/8" x 3/8" in order to carry the
stress imposed upon it by a bottle.
Your Wine
Rack needs to be strong. So does your floor structure. According to
our random sampling, the average 750 ml Wine Bottle weighs 2.87 pounds.
If you were to have a Wine Rack containing 1500 bottles, the contents
of the wine rack would weigh 4,305 pounds. In addition to the weight
of the wine bottles you need to add the weight of the Wine Rack itself.
A rule of thumb is that a Wine Rack will add half a pound per bottle
or 17% of the weight of the wine. In our example your collection will
have an approximate total weight of over 5000 pounds. That is similar
to parking a SUV in your room. Make sure your floor joists and connectors
are in good shape.

wine racks for you to choose from.
